Race Rules

Mountain bike events are conducted in the spirit of self-contained, self-reliant backcountry cycling. Amended rules and changes will be announced at the Race briefings.

1 RIDERS:

1.1 Minimum age of participation is 18 years, based on that the participant will be 19 years of age by the 31st of December in the year which the event takes place
1.2 Riders must be in good health and well trained.

2. MEDICAL:

2.1 Medical officers has the right to force a Rider to withdraw, should the rider be declared unfit or injured to continue in the race.
2.2 Any medical expenses incurred will be for the competitors account and will be claimed from their medical aid.
2.3 All competitors need comprehensive medical aid which will cover any medical expense which may be incurred whilst participating.

3. BICYCLES:

3.1 Only Mountain Bikes in good working order will be allowed to start the ride.
3.2 No more than one bike per rider is allowed. Riders must start and finish the event on the same bike.
3.3 Maintenance of bicycles during the ride is the responsibility of each rider.
3.4 Bike Marking should be done, so the bike board is mounted on the handle bars and visible at all times.
3.5 Should a rider not complete a stage due to Mechanical repairs, they may continue the remaining stages without a official result.

4. HELMETS AND CLOTHING:

4.1 Riding or pushing a bike without a helmet will result in immediate disqualification.
4.2 All helmets must comply with international ‘ANSI’ standards.
4.3 Clothing or riding attire should be respectable at all times, except with prior arrangement

5. SEPARATION TIME PENALTIES (STP’S):

5.1 Riders must ride with his/her team partner at all times.
5.2 Riders who are separated by more than 2 minutes from their team partner at any point in the stage will receive a Separation Time Penalty (STP) of 30min.
5.3 Team rider separation will be measured at the Start, Finish and can also be enforced at any point in the stage

6. RIDER IDENTIFICATION:

6.1 Riders must display their entire ride number at all times.
6.2 Bike numbers must be firmly fixed on the front of the bike, and must not be obscured by cables or any other item.
6.3 Bike number boards must not be modified or mutilated in any way, including cutting, adding stickers, removing existing stickers or trimming.
6.4 Rider identification must be shown during Lunches, Dinners and Prize giving ceremonies.

7. OBLIGATORY EQUIPMENT

7.1 Any riders on specific personal medications are responsible for supplying and carrying such medication.
7.2 At least 1 litre liquid capacity per rider.
7.3 Multi-tool or bike repair tools.
7.4 Cell phones, carry at least one phone per team, that is charged and the safety number saved.
These items must be considered the bare minimum, and it is strongly recommended that riders ensure that they are fully prepared to deal with emergencies they may encounter.

8. ROUTE AND STAGES:

8.1 The routes will be clearly marked with arrow boards, candy tape, flags and or marshals along the route.
8.2 It is the riders responsibility to follow markers and obey the instructions of the route managers.
8.3 Both riders must finish each stage together to ensure a finishing time and position.

9. TRAFFIC REGULATIONS:

9.1 Riders must obey and adhere to all Traffic regulations at all times
9.2 Roads crossed must be considered as active roads, as no 100% road closures can be done.

10. REGISTRATION AND BRIEFING:

10.1 Please ensure that both riders are present at the first race briefing, Friday 24 April 2015.
10.2 Race briefings will be one during the evening prize giving ceremonies.
10.3 Registration will be at ATKV Goudini during Friday 24 April 2015

11. NUTRITION AND HYDRATION:

11.1 Riders retain the ultimate responsibility to carry enough fluids and personal nutrition with them.
11.2 The event organizers will provide water, fruit and wine at various points during each stage.
11.3 Each stage will have at least three Water points, approximately 25km apart.

12. SECONDING AND SUPPORT:

12.1 Riders may receive assistance from fellow riders.
12.2 Outside seconding, is permitted in designated areas only.
12.3 No attachments between bikes will be permitted.
12.4 No form of drafting is permitted whatsoever including, but not limited to, tractors, private vehicles, motor cycles and trucks.
12.5 No seconding vehicles are allowed on the route at any stage. Any team support vehicles will be treated as trespassing by the Land Owners and the Team will be disqualified.

13. WITHDRAWALS AND THE FORMATION OF NEW TEAMS:

13.1 In the event of withdrawal, it is the Teams responsibility to inform the Race Office
13.2 In the event of a search and rescue operation being initiated for a rider or team which has withdrawn, but has not informed the Race Office, the cost of the search and rescue operation will be transferred to the rider or team.
13.3 Should one member with draw they may join another solo rider to form a new team. Solo riders will start with the last start group each day.
13.4 Newly formed teams will not qualify for team ranking.

14. ENVIRONMENTAL:

14.1 Please do not litter on the routes and use the bins provided at water points.

15. PROTESTS:

15.1 Any protests must be submitted in writing, to the Commissar after the rider has crossed the finish line, within 1 hour.
15.2 Unruly behaviour on the finish line can result into immediate disqualification.
15.2 Time penalty and or disqualification can and will enforced upon successful protests.

16. DOPING:

16.1 Any riders may be tested at any stage or time during the entire event by Drug Free Sports SA , personnel and its affiliates.
16.2 Any athletes banned from other races due to doping will not be allowed to race at Gravel & Grape.

17. DISQUALIFICATION AND PENALTIES:

17.1 Riding at any point on any stage without a helmet.
17.2 Littering.
17.3 Not adhering to rules and regulations
17.4 Swearing, throwing your bike (tantrum) or spitting
17.5 A comprehensive penalty list can be obtained from the Race office or commissar.

18. RACE CANCELLATION

The Organisers of the race will attempt to do everything in their power to prevent race cancellation, but they reserve the right to do so. In this event, competitors indemnify Gravel & Grape against any liability and claims howsoever incurred. No refunds. No exceptions.
